Top 3 Morzine Beginner Areas

If you are a beginner or have beginners in your holiday group when visiting Morzine its important to know where  is best for them to learn to ski. Learning in the right place can be a big advantage and ultimately impact how much we enjoy learning to ski. Morzine has 3 main beginner areas that are all accessible for people staying in Morzine, these are for first time skiers thats have not skier before. With the right instructor and support learners can be off of the designated beginner areas and skiing green and blue runs within 2-4 hours of lessons. Choosing the wrong runs to move on to after the beginner area can have a negative effect on confidence and technique so its important to progress gradually without big jumps in difficulty. This is a big part of why a good instructor is so important when learning the basics.

  • Pleney – The Pleney beginner area is located at the top of the Pleney bubble lift. Once at the top of the bubble its a short walk up past the Viking Hotel to the bottom of the lift. There is a large open flat space thats great for the early stage of learning to move around on skis before using the lift. The lift itself is an enclosed rolling carpet (Tapis Viking on the piste map) that is at a comfortable gradient for learning to ski. Once comfortable linking turns down this slope the progression onto the Nabor and Belvedere chairlifts are gentle and what ultimately make the Pleney the number one spot.

 

  • Nyon – This is a smaller beginner area that also has a rolling carpet lift, its generally much quieter than the Pleney side in the peak weeks but can be slightly harder to get to. Nyon is part of Morzine but easier to access by bus or car (free car parking) if you are staying in the centre of town. If you are already staying in the Nyon area then uploading on the Nyon cable car is quick and gets you to the birds of prey cafe and the Nyon beginner area.

 

  • Avoriaz – The beginner area for Avoriaz is great in many ways but lacks a rolling carpet lift so it’s straight onto the poma lift. Terrain is great and with multiple poma’s available in town and by the Chapelle park there’s plenty of choice. The lack of a rolling carpet holds the Avoriaz to 3rd spot but the options once off the beginner slopes are some of the best in the Porte du Soleil. The Proclou run which is directly below the beginner area has a kids park section with rollers and small jumps, plus a tree run that has a kids play area with slides, swings and routes through the trees.

 

For the ultimate combo we recommend a few days in Pleney until you have found your feet on green runs and then popping up to Avoriaz for more easy greens and the variety of blue runs Proclou offers. All these areas are relatively easy to get to from the centre of Morzine, the Avoriaz and Nyon areas require a short trip on a bus but are well worth the journey. To get to Avoriaz from Morzine you can also ride the Super Morzine Bubble and then ski a very chilled green run all the way to the Proclou lift, we recommend using the bus to Prodain until you are linking turns. After that the greens runs of Super Morzine are a great way to get around.
